Afghani Girl - Sharbat Gula

I've always thought the picture shot by Steve McCurry for the June 1985 edition of the National Geographic cover was a powerful photo. For some reason, the very fact that he managed to capture such a perfect shot during such a hectic period of time is both amazing and awe-inspiring.

The picture seems almost to capture the girl as she is realizing that she is being watched. Her expression seems almost hostile or mad, as if shes not really sure whether or not she wants her picture taken. But then there is so much in her expression that isn't readable at all. Maybe shes thinking of all the hardships she has been through is having to run from her home? Is she mourning the loss of her parents?

I hope that someday I will be able to capture an image that hold so much emotion. Human expression is a miracle in that it holds things which can be seen clearly and others that can never be identified.
